The Penannular Brooch dates back to 1st century B.C. in design and function. When the travelling Celtic warrior needed to fasten his traditional kilt across his body (which also doubled as bed, blanket, cloak and tent) he would use this heavy brooch to fasten the folds of fabric around his midrift and across his chest.
